Description

Adult

Wingspan of 40-52 mm. Forewings dark brown to grey-brown with small ovoid white patch with black eyelet. Cross line on forewing just before middle has 4 equally sized projections. Copper marking on underside of hindwing is minimal along trailing edge.

Larvae

Length of 37-42 mm. Body green, speckled white with a white dorsal line and a yellowish tipped hump on dorsal surface of 11th segment. Head bright green and thoracic legs mainly green.

Eggs

Eggs are laid singly or in small batches on leaves, twigs and branches.

Distribution

Europe and parts of Asia as far east as Japan.

Economic Host(s)

Trees such as oak (Quercus), ash (Fraxinus), birch (Betula), hornbeam (Carpinus) and orchard trees.

Symptoms/Signs

Larval feeding can cause severe defoliation and fruit damage can also occur.
