Description

Adult

Wingspan of 15-18 mm. Forewings pale brown to whitish grey with variable dark brown bands and spots. Hindwings greyish-brown.

Larvae

Up to 14mm long and grey or bluish-white to dark cream. Pinacula are black and head light or yellowish brown, marked with black. Prothoracic plate light brown to dark brown, marked with black. Anal comb with 6 long teeth. Thoracic legs light to dark brown.

Eggs

Greenish-yellow, flat and oval. Laid singly or in batches on plants, trunks, posts and other supports.

Distribution

Europe, the Canary Islands and Newfoundland.

Economic Host(s)

Cultivated flowers and young spruce (Picea) trees.

Symptoms/Signs

First instars mine leaves forming irregular blotch like mines. Later instars feed within the shelter of spun leaves or capped flowers.
