Adult

9-11 mm wingspan. Forewings shiny grey & hind wings also shiny grey. Head grey with pale grey antennae

Larvae

Up to 4.5 mm long with 16 legs. Dark brown with black head & prothoracic plate. Pair of small black plates present on second thoracic segment.

Eggs

Bright yellow turning to dark red, deposited singly on young needles.

Distribution

Central and Northern Europe. Recently introduced to North America.

Economic Host(s)

Larch (Larix) species.

Symptoms/Signs

Larvae feed on young needles giving tips whitish colour under a lens. Rounded entry hole may also be visible.
