Description

Adult

Wingspan of 19-27 mm. Forewings yellow to brownish-grey with characteristic pale stripe along fore edge and an orange spot in the basal third of the wing. Hindwings pale grey with dark venation and a dark double line in front of the fringe. Fringe is long and pale.

Larvae

Length of 15-22 mm. Body colour varies from dirty greenish-grey to reddish.

Eggs

Yellowish and shiny. Laid on all parts of the host plant.

Distribution

Cosmopolitan

Economic Host(s)

Legumes including soybean, lima bean, pea, lentil and alfalfa.

Symptoms/Signs

Larvae bore into pods to feed leaving a brown entry spot. As the larvae feeds within the pod accumulation of frass in the pod results in the formation of rotten patches. A further large hole is produced when the larva exits to pupate in the ground.
