Description
Adult
Length of 8-11 mm. Uniform mid brown with dense covering of pale hairs. Pronotum & elytra with rounded appearance. Rows of pits on elytra are darker giving a striated appearance. Legs & antennae uniformly brown.
Larvae
Length of 17-20 mm & width less than 2 mm. Head flattened with short mandibles. Body shiny and pale yellow.
Eggs
Length of 17-20 mm & width less than 2 mm. Head flattened with short mandibles. Body shiny and pale yellow.
Distribution
Throughout Europe, parts of Asia, North America and New Zealand.
Economic Host(s)
Wide range of root and leafy crops including sugar beet, potatoes, oats and barley.
Symptoms/Signs
Plant damage includes boring and feeding of roots and injury to stem bases. Patchy seedling emergence, wilting of seedlings and plant bending are all symptoms.
