Description

Adult

Wingspan of 13-199mm. Forewings with hook like tips, dark reddish brown to ochreous with dark markings. Hind wings pale grey, darker in the female.

Larvae

Up to 144mm long. Greyish green or yellowish green with pale pinacula. Prothoracic plate reddish brown or green. Anal comb yellowish & thoracic legs black.

Eggs

Oval, yellowish-green deposited or in small clusters on the bark of trunks and branches.

Distribution

Central and Northern Europe and North America.

Economic Host(s)

Trees & shrubs, including apple (Malus), pear (Pyrus) and cherry (Prunus). Leaves, flowers and young shoots are all attacked.

Symptoms/Signs

Larvae feed in the protection of webbed leaves, usually at tups of young shoots. Young leaf tissue is distorted.
