Description

Adult

Forewing length of 15-18 mm in the male and 17-24 mm in the females. Forewings brown to pale brown with darker markings. Rhombic shaped mark on fore costa in male. Males fore wings paler. Hind wings grey and with apical orange-yellow colouration in the female. Head and thorax brown.

Larvae

Length up to 22 mm. Body light green to dark green with pale pinacula. Head and prothoracic plate light brown to black. Anal plate green to light brown.

Eggs

Green flat oval shaped eggs, 0.9 mm in length laid in a raft like mass on woody parts of the host.

Distribution

Europe, the Middle East, northern Asia and North America.

Economic Host(s)

A range of fruit trees and shrubs, in particular apple (Malus), Currant (Ribes) and pear (Pyrus).

Symptoms/Signs

Early instars feed on developing buds while later instars move to feed on leaves and young fruit in the shelter of rolled leaves.
