Adult

Wingspan of 24-25 mm. Abdomen striped with thin yellow stripes on black. Orange scales present on the wings along with black scales.

Larvae

Length of 13-16 mm. Body greyish-white and transparent. Head pale brown and mottled. Dorsal vessel greyish.

Eggs

Distributed across southern and central Europe and eastwards across to Ukraine.

Distribution

India and Pakistan, Mauritius, the Middle East and northern Africa.

Economic Host(s)

Sainfoin (Onobrychis) plantations

Symptoms/Signs

Larvae feed on pith of the roots of their host to depths of 12 cm. Inhabited roots may be indicated by the presence of frass within or alongside hosts.
